Hey Y’all,
I have been a loyal, devoted and hardcore fan of Michael Jackson for sixteen years and of course in that long time span--which has outlasted like five of Liz Taylor’s marriages LOL--I have tons and tons of memories that pertain to Michael. From time to time, I’d like to post a Random MJ Memory. And this is the first one. One of my proudest moments when I was little, was when I bought my very first Michael Jackson album. I was only nine years old and had only liked Michael for maybe two months when I kept bugging and bugging the hell out of my poor mother to buy me an album.
So eventually, she broke down and took me to the local record store to go pick out a cassette. (Yes, my first MJ album was on cassette!)
I remember I was so excited when I went into the store and asked the man behind the counter to see what they had by Michael Jackson. He laid out about five or six different albums. And I keenly remember picking up the Thriller album and moving it OUT of the way because at the time, I didn’t recognize Michael as a darker skinned man, just lighter skinned.
I ended up picking out the Bad album because I “recognized” Michael on that one. It was only about ten dollars and my mom bought it for me and I literally ran back to the van.
At first I was kind of scared to play the album, because it was called “bad” and Michael looked “tough” on the front of the album, I assumed he was going to be cursing up a storm and singing dirty. But he wasn’t and I ended up playing that album over and over all the time until the tape snapped. Before I bought the album on CD five years later, I replaced it THREE times on cassette. And to this day, Bad is still my favorite album.
But I still kick myself for not buying Thriller as my first album. Its kind of my thing to NOT buy a singer’s most famous album as my first album. (When I got into Prince, I bought a compilation album first as opposed to Purple Rain which was right on the shelf with it) I’m glad that Bad was my first album. Wouldn’t change a thing.
